Hi, I completely agree with you on that big chain hotels are not for everybody. Check out VillasCorcovado Hotel in Peninsula de Osa, Costa Rica. It is a small little hotel in the middle of the forest and it is just a great retreat!

Ciao,

I hear you Gene. The readers of those major magazines are so inundated with chain hotel info that they tend to parrot that back when it's survey time. I'll take a small boutique hotel with personality over a Four Seasons as well (and I too have problems paying $25 for breakfast in Costa Rica), but the big boys do often have the prime real estate and views.

I actually don't think either are accurate! Four Seasons in Costa Rica-please. I made the mistake of staying here once and once was too much.Too many fake smiles and overpriced runny eggs. These chain resorts are nothing more than overpriced, impersonal, cookie cutter resorts. The best hotels aren't listed because they are the smaller, more intimate resorts that don't have the big priced publicists getting them on these lists. Once in a great while a true gem will end up on one of these lists, but it's rare. Even if it is real readers some of the time, most of John Q. Public that respond to these surveys fall prey to the hype and don't really contribute anything new to the mix. Those that dare do more research and step out of the box end up with amazing and unique experiences that they will actually want to keep a secret. I found one of those in an exclusive luxury boutique hotel in Costa Rica and I'm not telling anyone that would be happy at a Four Season's about this magical place!

I was wondering about that myself as I looked at the Top-100 in the world list. There are some really wierd entries on that CN poll that look like funny business of some kind. Routine all-inclusives, a few boutique hotels that almost nobody has visited, and a Casa Magna Marriott?! Strange.
