I like to carry several cards and where possible, keep at least one locked in the safe in my room. This way, if my wallet or purse gets stolen, I have another card with me.

It's funny because one trick I always tell my clients is to call their cards and let them know they'll be overseas. I've had my card frozne for potential fraud while on vacation on several occasions when I didn't so this helps to avoid that. The downside is, if someone does steal your card when away, the card company doesn't realize it.

The other reason I carry several cards is more simplistic - not everyone takes every card. We were in South Africa this past spring and my sister only had a MC and ran into several places that only took Visa. Without one of us lending her the card, she wouldn't have been able to pay for anything!

For Jennifer using the Capital One, they are the only company (at least they have been historically). So keep on using it - it'll save you money!

It used to be 2% for American Express---until they company started losing money in the banking crisis. Now they've raised it to 2.7% to get their hand further in each customer's pocket. It's stupid because people who travel overseas are probably their biggest spending cardholders. I'm tired of it and only use my Capital One card now when traveling. The Platinum Amex sits unused after departure except to get me into an airline lounge.
