Most of the luxury Ambergris Caye resorts of Belize that we’ve reviewed are a short hop from the main town of San Pedro. El Secreto is a different story, requiring a transfer by boat to the far end of the island.
Once there, however, it does feel like a secret, a place tucked away where nobody else can find it.
El Secreto is the newest luxury hotel on Belize’s most popular island, a 13-villa resort that’s 11 miles from town. This is a place to relax, eat fresh seafood prepared with pizazz, and gaze out to the Caribbean Sea. There’s a real sandy beach to lounge on here too, which is not often a given in Belize.
The main attraction for many who come here is the glorious coral reef just off the coast. You’ll see plenty of colorful fish just snorkeling around on an excursion from the resort, but of course the staff can arrange scuba diving trips that go deeper.
Villas here are some of the best-equipped on the island, with their own plunge pools outside, whirlpool baths inside, and outdoor showers. You may feel isolated physically, but you get air conditioning, Wi-fi, and flat-screen HDTVs.
Just bring some bug repellant and maybe some ExOfficio InsectShield clothing for when the sun starts going down. This is the tropics and it’s not the big city…
