Although Costa Rica is a small country--just a speck on that map to your left--it is far ahead of its neighbors when it comes to luxury hotels. Costa Rica's tourism people have done a great job of marketing the destination over the past two decades and the throngs of visitors from the U.S. and Canada have led to high standards and a lot of foreign investment. Costa Rica probably has the best-developed array of upscale hotels of any country between Mexico and Argentina.
Costa Rica was the first country in the region to go all out luring adventure travelers and eco-travelers, so the main focus is usually interacting with nature rather than trying to hold it back and seal it off. There are beach resorts, yes, but the coast here is not as spectacular as it it in some neighboring countries. What you will find in Costa Rica is a strong supply of hotel architects, designers, and managers who know how to compete with the best hotels in the world. Facilities and services are better-developed here than in many other Latin American countries and the staffers are generally better trained and more fluent in English than in regions further behind on the tourism development stages. Come for a heavy dose of adventure, but with a sumptuous room to retire to as the sun goes down.
