The luxury hotel scene in Peru has taken a major upswing in the past few years. When the Orient-Express company took over the train system in Peru and opened up its luxury train lines, this coincided with new hotel developments in Lima, Machu Picchu, Cusco, and recently Colca Canyon. With one of the world's top upscale hotel chains moving in, competitors soon needed to make major improvements or get left behind. So they did.
The result is that discerning travelers can find some of the best lodging choices in South America in Peru and in some areas there are two truly great hotels competing for your business.
The downside is that most of this development has been limited to the main tourist stops on a well-worn path. When you get into less-traveled areas--even Puno--the pickings can get much slimmer. We are vigilently watching for new developments however. As soon as other noteworthy upscale hotels open up, we'll be there to get a first-hand look at how they rate.
