Sheraton Colonia Golf & Spa Resort–Colonia del Sacramento

Continuación Rambla Las Américas s/n 70000, Colonia del Sacramento

The modern Sheraton is a contrast to old historic Colonia, Uruguay's World Heritage site. Located on the Rio de la Plata, Sheraton guests can play golf, lounge around the attractive pool, and relax at the spa, across the water from Buenos Aires.

The Sheraton Colonia Golf & Spa Resort is conveniently located in the countryside, ten minutes from historic Colonia, and an hour away from Buenos Aires by ferry. Guests arriving at the Sheraton Colonia will first take notice of the vintage cars parked outside, which are a common site in Uruguay. Asked to be picked up in one and it just might happen. Upon entering the atria lobby guests are greeted with a panoramic view of the expansive lawns and pools. The lobby makes extensive use of wood, stone, and leather along with large indoor lanterns that give an at–one feel with nature. On a cool day, sitting in front of the mammoth fireplace is a treat.

Sheraton lobbyWith views of the Rio de la Plata, the Cava Real Restaurant, with el fresco seating, offers international and Uruguayan steaks and seafood prepared on an Uruguayan wood–burning grill. Select from over 120 world–class wines from their private wine collection including plenty from Argentina and Uruguay. Stone walls and arched window give a romantic cave–like ambiance. After a morning of golf or just a change of pace afternoon tea service features hors d'oeuvres and pastries especially prepared by the chef.

The interconnecting circular outdoor pools are ringed with sombras—thatched sunshades. Attendants are ready with refreshing towels on a hot day. Salsa lessons and other activities are common in the pool area. A kiddie pool is available and a small river beach is nearby. The luxury Real Spa creates a serene ambiance with candles and Asian décor. With 17 treatment rooms and an indoor seawater swimming pool, the spa provides a variety of treatments including, hydro–massage along with a Jacuzzi, sauna, steam bath, aerobics center, and a small but fully equipped, state–of–the–art gym. Yoga and other health–related classes are available. The Sheraton Colonia's spa also offers special wellness and weight loss packages under the guidance of trained staff members. A big draw here is the Real Golf course, which features views of the Rio de la Plata. The course is currently a par 35, nine–hole course but a planned expansion will make it a par 70, 18–hole course. A game room and a special program for children are also available.

The well–appointed accommodations offer views of the golf course or the Rio de la Plata. On a clear day the skyscrapers of Buenos Aries can be seen on the horizon. Accommodations are large, with great views of the surroundings. King–size beds have pillow mattresses and duvets sporting locally made mantas. Discerning guests prefer the suites with river views, plasma TVs, and a balcony. While the suites are roomy, light, and comfortable, the décor is functional but uninspiring.

Staffers will plan excursions into the historic district of Colonia. (Dining at El Drugstore in Colonia's historic district is a must. Guests can choose to sit under the trees or at a table in 1920s Model T after exploring the historic district.) Like many new hotels there are times when the Sheraton suffers from inexperience on the part of the staff. Hopefully this will improve as the hotel grows in experience.
