If you’re a fisherman or have friends who like to reel in sailfish and blue marlin, you’ve probably heard of Los Sueños in Costa Rica. Or if you’re an international golfer, you may have had suenos of your own about teeing off here next to the Pacific Ocean. Perhaps you just want a base for the family to go on adventures and go wildlife viewing, a place that’s not too difficult to reach?
To do all this in style at Los Suenos, just an hour and a half from the San Jose Airport, the best bet is to skip the Marriott and splash out in a villa from HRG instead.
The condos and villas at Los Sueños are individually owned and managed by a range of companies, which means it can be kind of daunting sorting through the different agencies handling them here to find the right fit. HRG has 75 properties in its portfolio, including one I got to see that’s selling for $4.5 million if you decide to stay a while.
The options range from sprawling mansions like that one to golf course condos with two bedrooms and 1,450 square feet instead of five digits. Many have panoramic views of the bay and marina, plus their own pool or a one shared with a few other units. You can traverse the whole area on a golf cart they supply to guests and there are several excellent restaurants in the expansive complex, both at the marina and at the hotel. Of course the company can set up all the activities, such as tee times, and can stock the fridge in your gourmet kitchen in advance if you would like. They can also set up excursions for adventure activities or arrange a rental car.
While the beach here is just so-so, the protected bay has the country’s top marina for sports fisherman. If you’re looking to have great odds of hooking a marlin or you want to go up against some of the best in the Americas in a tournament, this is the place. Besides, if you rent a fishing yacht here, you can find plenty of gorgeous hidden beaches along the coast on your own.
Book your villa direct with HRG Vacations and Rentals or via their partner company WE-R-CR. The latter, based in San Jose, can combine a Los Sueños stay with other high-end options up north, at Alta Gracia, or around the wildlife-rich Gulfo Dulce in the south.
