People often talk of Belize as an ideal “surf and turf vacation” destination. Spend some time diving or snorkeling while staying by the water, then spend the other half on adventures in the thick jungle. In reality it’s probably better in reverse: do the adventures first then relax in a lounge chair on a beach. A bit of the jungle then a bit of the sea.
Despite all the unspoiled forest and wildlife around, the lodge is only 12 miles from capital city Belmopan and has an entrance off the Hummingbird Highway. So there’s no all-day difficult journey required to reach it. Over the years Caves Branch has gone more upscale, but always keeping the adventure travel tours it has been offering for more than 16 years at its core. You won’t exactly be roughing it at bedtime though. Here’s one of their canopy view tree houses:
Before Hurricane Earl hit last week and made a big mess, Belize was having a record year for tourism, with arrivals up 16.5% for the first half of the year. No fatalities were reported from this one, thankfully, and crews are working hard to clear all the debris. Ambergris Caye and Belize City got hit the worst, while Placencia mainly has a lot of thatch roofs, palapas, and office shacks to replace. All resorts there appear to be back open a few days after the storm.
Chabil Mar has what is probably the most convenient spot in Placencia, on the best stretch of beach on the mainland, yet close enough to the village for a long walk or short bike ride. This resort is a finely tuned operation that has invested a lot in its facilities every year, evolving from a collection of rental villas to a full-blown resort with a restaurant, bar, and several swimming pools. Plus it has this terrific pier where they can arrange a private romantic dinner:
The jungle and sea package from these two resorts provides seven nights of accommodation split between the two resorts. Caves Branch and Chabil Mar sort out all the transfers and welcome you in style at both places. The vacation package price includes most everything except your airfare to get to Belize and any alcohol apart from beer at Caves Branch. Chabil Mar even makes one of the dinners at a restaurant in Placencia village so you can get out and about. They include some off-site tours as well, though if you’re a scuba diver that’s extra.
If you book before December 15, 2016 you can get a 20% discount. See prices and package details here: adventure and beach package in Belize.
