If you’ve got plenty of money to invest in luxury real estate and are looking for your dream property on a beach where it’s always warm, you will probably find what you want in Los Cabos. That’s my conclusion after checking out listings and new developments from Cabo San Lucas to San Jose del Cabo and beyond in Baja Sur, Mexico.
Los Cabos is now the indisputable champ when it comes to luxury beach resorts. Not just in Mexico, but in all of the Americas. More than a few of those wealthy vacationers have thought, “I’d like to have a more permanent place here” and have bought a condo, a second (or fifth) house, or their dream retirement home to get away from the cold for good.
There are plenty of high-priced real estate markets to choose from around the world, of course, but here you don’t have to settle. With a budget anywhere north of $1 million, you’re going to end up with something quite impressive on a golf course or even oceanfront. Bump it up another million or two and you’ll end up with the kind of mansion you see in design magazines. In other words, for what a starter home is going for in much of California these days, you can really get something exciting.
In our latest real estate round-up, The Pinnacle of Luxury Real Estate in Latin America, we spoke to multiple agents in the area and combed through the MLS—yes they have one here—to see what you can expect to get for your investment. There are certainly cheaper places to buy in Mexico, even in Baja, but no market has the wide variety of choices between $500K and $5 million that Los Cabos has.
The area is starting to even get a few of those eye-popping listings that make international news, the latest being a $50 million property that you can’t really call a house. It’s a collection of buildings on 2.56 oceanfront acres, with 23 bedrooms. There will be a lot of chatter around town if that place is sold to a residential buyer rather than a hotelier.
The sweet spot for Cabo Real Estate is $750,000 to $2 million. That’s where the bulk of the inventory is and where you can get into almost any development. That will get you an inland home with golf membership, lots of public facilities in a gated community, and high-end finishes. On the water that can get you into a prestigious community and you’ll have living space of at least 2,000 square feet in a condo, more in a house. Either way, you’ve got close to 365 days of sunshine and a vibrant community of other residents from Mexico, USA, Canada, Europe, and beyond.
