Last month I visited the Four Seasons Punta Mita Resort & Spa for the third time. Every time it gets better, thanks to continual renovations and redesigns, upgrades, and a small army of well-trained staffers to look after your every need.

Four Seasons Punta de Mita tour

There are around 800 of those staffers making sure you have an enjoyable stay, from groundskeepers to waiters to masseuses and a large percentage of them speak English well. Four Seasons treats them well and gives them opportunities to advance, otherwise they’d all get poached by the increasing number of competitors in this Riviera Nayarit area north of Puerto Vallarta. The current manager has been with the company for 26 years though, working on multiple continents, which is a testament to the company’s status as the luxury leader to beat in the hospitality industry.

We just posted an updated review, so check that out for lots of details and more photos.

The first time I set foot in the Punta Mita development, in the mid-00s, I was alone. The second time I came with my wife and daughter, so we got to see the allure of the resort for families. Eleven years later, my daughter still raves about our stay there and no wonder. She got a welcome basket with a stuffed animal and cookies with her name on them, a kid-sized robe, and access to a lazy river pool and a game room. She was in heaven!

Punta de Mita golf island hole

It wasn’t so bad for me either: I got to go play golf on one of the best courses in the country, landing a drive on this little island. (OK, on the second try, but that’s what mulligans are for…)

This last time it was my wife and I as empty nesters just coming off a big anniversary, so we got to see the Four Seasons Punta Mita like a romantic couple would instead. It’s ideal for that too. We had a lovely suite with a plunge pool, ate some fantastic meals, got massages, and did a Mexican spirits tasting in the main bar with a view of waves crashing on the shore as the sun went down. This time I shot some video, so come take a tour of the place:

It’s hard for anyone on this coast to top the Four Seasons Punta Mita, partly because they have such a prime location on what is the most upscale development in all of Mexico. This gated community of 1,500 acres is full of multi-million dollar hotels, two impeccably maintained golf courses, a tennis center, and multiple beach clubs. This property and the St. Regis are the only hotels here though and the latter has a smaller footprint than this sprawling resort.

The average stay went from a few days to a few weeks as families logged into online classrooms from here and remote CEOs and business owners decided this view and weather beat what they had in their primary residence elsewhere.

The resort took advantage of the lower occupancy though by tackling some projects that were too disruptive for normal times, like a renovation of the main pool and the repainting of all exterior surfaces in a more subtle color scheme. Nearly all of the rooms and suites got a redesign as well, with beautiful furniture–much of it in gorgeous hardwoods–and artistic touches with a strong sense of place in Mexico. The resort has never looked better than it does now and it has shaken off some of the stodgier traditional decor that had hung around since the opening.
